Opening a Bank Account in Gran Canaria

Which banks work best for expats, what documents you need, and the one mistake everyone makes.

You'll need a Spanish bank account for rent, utilities, and autónomo payments. The good news: several banks will open a non-resident account with just your passport and NIE. The bad news: the process still involves going to a branch and waiting.

Which bank?

CaixaBank and Sabadell are the most foreigner-friendly in our experience. CaixaBank has the best mobile app and ATM network on the island. Sabadell has English-speaking staff at some branches in Las Palmas. BBVA works too but their appointment system is frustrating. Avoid Bankinter unless you already have a Spanish tax return — they require proof of income in Spain.

The one mistake

Don't use a digital-only bank (Wise, Revolut, N26) as your only account. Spanish landlords, utility companies, and the tax office all expect a Spanish IBAN with a traditional bank. Use your digital bank for day-to-day spending and international transfers, but keep a real Spanish account for everything official.
